Rockhampton Zoo welcomes new chimp ‘Jery’ to the troop

Introductions are underway at the Rockhampton Zoo between the chimp troop and their newest male primate, 27 year old Jery from Sydney Zoo in Eastern Creek.
Parks, Sport and Public Spaces Councillor Cherie Rutherford said Jery is spending his settling in period in a safe and private enclosure, away from the public eye.
“Rockhampton Zoo’s Head Primate Keeper spent the last week at Sydney Zoo getting to know Jery and has overnight travelled with Jery alongside Sydney Zoo’s Head Primate Keeper and vet to Rockhampton,” Cr Rutherford said.
“We are pleased to say that he was very relaxed throughout the trip and released really well this morning at the Rockhampton Zoo.
“Whilst visitors will not be able to see Jery during his settling in period, they may hear natural vocalisations of the troop which could be quite loud and may include screaming.
“This is a natural response when chimps are introduced to new chimps, and at times it may even become physical, which is why we need to take the time to keep their introductions private.
“Our zookeepers will be watching the behaviours of Jery and our troop throughout this process, which can take days, weeks or even months, to help determine who he will get along with.
“Ultimately, we’re hoping for a strong bond to be built between Jery and our alpha male, Alon.
“The establishment of this companionship is important as all relationships in a chimp troop benefit when the alpha chimp has his own supportive ‘boy club’.
“Jery, who has been described as reserved yet playful, is also looking for some new male companions so we are very happy to play a part in the welfare of Jery through the Australasian Species Management Program for Chimpanzees.
“Our Zoo has established a strong reputation within our local community and beyond, and through our commitment to animal welfare, conversation and education, we are extremely proud to participate in this Program.
“As a result, we have great relationships with many chimpanzee experts who we can continue to consult with throughout Jery’s settling in period.
“During this time, we ask the community to be respectful of Jery’s transition and give the troop some time to establish their relationships in private.
“We know this process can take a while and we appreciate the community’s patience.
“An official announcement will be made once Jery has been released into the main chimp enclosure and is ready for you all to meet him and fall in love.”
Jery adds to the existing troop of seven chimpanzees at the Rockhampton Zoo where the ages span from 18 months to 51 years old.
Jery is not a complete male and will not be used for breeding purposes.
