Rockhampton’s Pilbeam Theatre has been given new life, with a three‑part package of major works now complete—delivering improved access and parking, an upgraded air‑conditioning system, and essential repairs to the roof.

Proudly funded by the Queensland Government, the $6.2 million project ensures this much‑loved venue remains accessible, comfortable, and functional for years to come.

The final component of the upgrade—the new chiller system—has been installed to meet the demands of a significant 2026 calendar of events at the Theatre.

The new system replaces ageing infrastructure that has been in service for decades, providing a noticeable boost in comfort for patrons and performers alike.

With modern climate‑control technology now in place, visitors will experience improved airflow, quieter operation, and better temperature control across all seating areas.

The repairs will allow for an extended life for the Pilbeam Theatre, as Council works on a business case to consider the long-term future of performing arts in the Rockhampton Region.

Council thanks the community for their patience throughout the staged period of works.

Roof repairs were completed in August 2025, while the car park upgrade, including improvements to disability entry and upgrades to resident and visitor access via Quay Lane, wrapped up in February 2026.

Assistant Minister for Mental Health, Drug and Alcohol Treatment, Families and Seniors and Central Queensland, and Member for Rockhampton Donna Kirkland MP Quotes:

“It’s fantastic to see the upgrade works at the Pilbeam Theatre now complete. This venue means so much to our community, and these improvements ensure it will stay welcoming, accessible, and comfortable for years to come”.

“These upgrades represent a fresh start for the Pilbeam Theatre and a real example of delivering for Queensland. The improvements set the venue up for the future and reaffirm its place as a vital cultural hub for Rockhampton.”

“It’s why the Crisafulli Government made the Works for Queensland program a permanent funding stream, so councils can deliver for communities just like ours. I’m supportive of Council’s investment in critical infrastructure that makes a real difference in Rockhampton.”

Rockhampton Region Mayor Tony Williams

“The Pilbeam Theatre is part of Rockhampton.  It’s the place we all go for end of year presentations, for the Eisteddfod and to watch comedy shows, musicals and bands.

“It is part of everyday life in our region and these projects are a great example of Council working with the State Government to make the theatre more accessible, more comfortable and to keep it operating for years to come.”

Quotes from Communities Culture and Heritage Councillor Drew Wickerson

“The Pilbeam Theatre has stood as an icon of Central Queensland performance and culture for more than 45 years.”

“We have a massive line-up of shows and events being delivered over the next 12 months and it’s wonderful to know that both patrons and performers will be benefitting from the works we’ve completed.”
