Major safety upgrades have been completed at the intersections of Kent and Derby Streets and Denison and Derby Streets, thanks to a joint initiative between Rockhampton Regional Council and the Australian Government.

With a $1.94 million contribution from the Australian Government’s Black Spot Program, Council is pleased to announce the completion of this important project.

The upgrades, including a new roundabout and additional safety measures, were designed to address the high-risk nature of these intersections.

Rockhampton Regional Council Mayor Tony Williams said the goal of the project was to simply make these intersections safer for everyone.

“The Derby and Denison Street intersection, in particular, has been a hotspot, with more than 10 crashes reported in the past five years, including one fatality," Mayor Williams said.

“That’s why we worked through a design and changes that will improve safety.

“Again, it’s another example of how Council works with the Federal Government to deliver real, tangible improvements in our region and improve road safety.”

Infrastructure Councillor Marika Taylor highlighted how the works were specifically designed to address the issues at these intersections.

“The installation of the new roundabout at Derby and Kent Streets was designed to slow vehicles approaching the Denison Street rail crossing,” Cr Taylor said.

“Raised traffic calming platforms have also been installed near the rail line to help reduce speeds and give drivers a clearer view of oncoming traffic.

“Other enhancements included new line marking and adjustments to parking arrangements, which improve visibility and further reduce accident risks.

“I’m pleased to see the area officially reopened to road users and want to thank residents and businesses for their patience while we completed these works.”

Council completed additional works on Denison Street, between Derby and Stanley Street.

These works included drainage improvements, kerb replacements, pavement repairs, asphalt resurfacing, and improved line marking.

Funded by the Australian Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program and Rockhampton Regional Council, these upgrades will benefit all road users.
