One of the state’s biggest equine events, the Cap Coast Classic barrel racing competition, gallops back into Gracemere this weekend, backed by a $6,000 grant from Rockhampton Regional Council.

The annual competition attracts hundreds of competitors from across the state, all vying for a share of a substantial prize pool.

Deputy Mayor and Communities, Heritage and Culture Councillor Drew Wickerson said Council has supported the event for many years now through its Community Assistance Program.

“The Cap Coast Classic is such a great event, bringing people from across Queensland and interstate to watch and compete,” Cr Wickerson said.

“Council is excited to once again support this year’s event with a grant through the Community Assistance Program.

“Events like this are exactly what the program is about, and they are really important to our community.”

ABHA Capricorn Coast Secretary Suzy Patteson said support for events such as the Cap Coast Classic was integral to keeping them running.

“The ABHA Capricorn Coast club has been operating since 2003. It started as one of the smallest barrel racing clubs and, over the years, the Cap Coast Classic has grown into one of the largest equine events held in Queensland,” Ms Patteson said.

“The Community Assistance Program grant helps keep prices low so families can come and compete, spend time in our great region and invest in our local economy.

“With the cost of machinery, venue hire, and all aspects of running this event in our region, this support is invaluable for not-for-profit clubs.”

The Gracemere Hotel ABHA Capricorn Coast Classic will be held at CQLX Gracemere from 21 to 24 May.

The Community Assistance Program supports non-profit, community-based organisations with funding for grants and sponsorships for projects and events that enhance the region’s wellbeing.

Applications for Round One of the Community Assistance Program are open until July 10.
