Rockhampton Regional Council is ‘bringing nature back’ through the launch of a new program designed to encourage residents to play their part in looking after our local environment.

The ‘Bringing Nature Back’ program received $19,990 from the Australian Government which will assist Council to deliver a range of practical workshops and activities for residents.

Chair of Parks and Recreation Committee, Councillor Cherie Rutherford, today thanked Federal Member for Capricornia, Michelle Landry, for the Australian Government’s contribution.

“This program is a key initiative under Council’s Environmental Sustainability Strategy and the Federal Government’s support allows us to kick-start this program to create opportunities for our community to connect with nature and help protect and enhance the character and livability of our Region,” Cr Rutherford said.

“It’s all about helping residents learn about our amazing natural environment and how simple actions can make a big difference at home and in our community.

“The program also showcases some of the work being done by our community partners including Fitzroy Basin Association, Capricornia Catchments, Native Plants Capricornia, Birdlife Capricornia, Greening Australia and more.”

Federal Member for Capricornia, Michelle Landry said it was great to see the Council progressing the natural environment within the Region.

“It’s so important to build capacity through local events and activities and to really value our natural assets, which all contribute to a great region to live and work while delivering the jobs Central Queenslanders need,” Ms Landry said.

“Even relatively small projects like this one are making a difference to the local economy as part of the nearly $3 billion-worth of infrastructure projects in Capricornia in recent times.

“I look forward to seeing locals take advantage of this great new program, to get outdoors and participate in improving our natural environment.

The Bringing Nature Back program will be launched at the annual Tropicana event this Sunday at the Botanic Gardens. There will be family-friendly workshops covering nature photography, citizen science, backyard habitat, native plants, composting, traditional rope making, recycling and much more.
