Managing Graffiti

What is graffiti?

Graffiti is vandalism and is illegal. It refers to writing, drawings or messages scribbled, scratched or spray painted on walls and other surfaces, often in a public place and without the permission of the rightful property owner.

Council’s Parks Maintenance team removes graffiti from public spaces and buildings owned and operated by Council and encourages residents to implement their own anti-graffiti measures at home.

What do I do if I have graffiti on my property?

If your property is affected by graffiti it should be reported to police in the first instance. Contact Policelink by phone on 131 444 or follow the link to www.policelink.qld.gov.au for more information, including how to report on-line or download the Policelink App.

You can also report graffiti to Council’s Graffiti Hotline on 07 4936 8368.

What help can I get from Council?

Council provides a free Graffiti Removal Kit, which contains removal liquid, removal wipes, a brush, goggles and a mask to help residents, businesses and community groups remove unsightly graffiti from their property.

The Graffiti Removal Kits can be collected from Council’s School of the Arts Building in Bolsover Street, Rockhampton or by calling 07 4936 8368.

Graffiti prevention tips

  • Join Neighbourhood Watch and share responsibility with your neighbours to help prevent and report graffiti.
  • Ensure your property is well-lit to deter graffiti vandalism.
  • Keep your property secure so vandals cannot easily access your walls or rooftops. Creepers, bushy foliage, grilles or lattice along walls can screen your surfaces and limit the amount of solid surface for graffiti vandals.
  • Dark wall and fence colours are less attractive to graffiti vandals.
  • Remove graffiti as soon as possible after reporting it. Graffiti that is left tends to attract more. Keep a supply of colour-matched paint so you can quickly paint over any graffiti in future. Protective coatings and smooth surfaces can make graffiti removal easier.

What do I do if I see graffiti on Council property?

Residents can report graffiti on Council property to Council directly so arrangements can be made for it to be removed.
