The most recent stage in a multi-part strategy to improve flood resilience in Park Avenue has been completed.

The project, Park Street Drainage Scheme Stage 5A, involved the installation of approximately 400 meters of stormwater drainage pipes and associated inlet structures along Tung Yeen Street in Park Avenue.

Park Street Drainage Scheme Stage 5A is a joint initiative of the Rockhampton Regional Council and the Queensland Government.

Rockhampton Mayor Margaret Strelow said that the works are part of a broader strategy to improve flood resilience in the area, and that the Council is grateful to the State Government for their support over multiple stages of the strategy.

“This project will help mitigate flooding on Tung Yeen Street, and ultimately reduce water flow through private property in the Haynes Street and Farrell Street areas as well,” said Mayor Strelow.

“More than $530,000 in funding for Park Street Drainage Scheme Stage 5A came from the Queensland Government 2017-19 Local Government Grants and Subsidies Program, and our community has undoubtedly benefited as a result.

“We also received funding from the Queensland Government for earlier stages in this multi-part strategy. Stages 2B and 3 of the Park Street Drainage Scheme received funding through the 2015-2016 Community Resilience Fund.”

Local Government Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said the Palaszczuk Government was continuing to invest in job-supporting infrastructure in Rockhampton and throughout regional Queensland.

“Our Local Government Grants and Subsidies Program is delivering great results for the people of Rockhampton, with these important flood mitigation measures in Tung Yeen Street,” he said.

“This is a big win for the local community and we’re pleased to be partnering with Council on this initiative.”

Council’s Infrastructure Committee Chair Councillor Tony Williams said that past flooding events in Park Avenue demonstrated the need for a strategy to improve drainage in the area.

“The work we have undertaken through the Park Street Drainage Scheme over the past six years will considerably improve flood resilience in the Park Avenue community and reduce the risk to public safety,” said Cr Williams.
