Cairns and the Whitsundays are closer than ever to Rockhampton with the first SkyTrans flight touching down in Rockhampton for the first time yesterday afternoon.

Rockhampton Regional Council secured the route earlier this year and Mayor Tony Williams said this was the start of even greater things to come.

“Watching that first Dash 8-100 touch down yesterday was actually quite the moment because I know how much this new route will mean to our community and visitors,” Mayor Williams said.

“It opens up new access into the heart of the Whitsundays and makes it easier than ever for that flight to Cairns and back.

“Now that we’ve secured this route, we want to make sure it thrives and I would encourage our whole community to support this flight – what better time for a quick getaway than the school holidays next week?” Mayor Williams said.

Airport Chair Councillor Neil Fisher said how proud he was of the Rockhampton team in attracting SkyTrans to the region.

“Our airport team has remained focused during the last 18 months in developing new destinations for Rockhampton. With the arrival of the first SkyTrans flight it is another feather in the cap for the airport and shows the strong interest around the country in Rockhampton.

“Just two weeks ago we were talking about Alliance moving their maintenance facility to Rockhampton, today its SkyTrans opening up this incredible new route.

“These flights are good for tourism, good for business, good for our community and good for visitors. The more people we can showcase our region to the better and, on the other side of the coin, we want to provide our community with access to tropical getaways like the Whitesundays.

“I commend everyone who worked so hard to make this happen and I would echo the Mayor’s voice and encourage everyone looking for a getaway or to have someone visit, to check out this new service,” Cr Fisher said.
