New music festival heats up Rockhampton: Singapore Sizzle heads our way in October
Rockhampton will turn up the heat in October, for a brand new music festival, Singapore Sizzle.
Presented by the Music and Drama Company (MDC), and supported by Rockhampton Regional Council, the free festival marks two major milestones - Singapore’s 60th year of independence and the 35th anniversary of the first Exercise Wallaby.
Exercise Wallaby is a long-standing miliary training exercise between the Singapore Armed Forces and the Australian Defence Force at Shoalwater Bay. The biannual exercise sees runs from August through to November and sees around 5,500 troops take part.
Filipino-Australian sensation grentperez will headline Singapore Sizzle’s the main stage. From viral YouTube covers to sold-out global tours, his soulful hit “Cherry Wine” has surpassed 100M Spotify streams, and his debut album hit the Top 3 on the ARIA charts.
Grentperez will be joined by Singaporean stars RINES, Gail Belmonte, and Dominic Chin, alongside Aussie favourites Kate Mahood and The Short Fall.
The festival is not just for music lovers, but foodies too. Attendees will receive a voucher for a Singaporean tasting platter crafted by MasterChef Australia Season 10 winner Sashi Cheliah – while stocks last!
The event will also feature cultural performances, an arts market and a dazzling fireworks display.
Singapore Sizzle will be held at the Rockhampton Showgrounds on Saturday 11 October from 10am to 9pm. Entry via the gate near the Robert Schwarten Pavilion (Exhibition Road).
Get your free tickets from www.seeitlive.com.au or the Pilbeam Theatre Box Office before the event and avoid queues, or get tickets at the gate on the day.
Rockhampton Mayor Tony Williams said:
“Rockhampton is a proud defence community and we have a long and proud relationship with the Republic of Singapore and the Singaporean Armed Forces.
“This is a great way to recognise that partnership and the extraordinary 35 years of Exercise Wallaby.
“It’s always struck me just how many of the people I meet from Singapore know and have visited Rockhampton.
“It’s because of this longstanding relationship we have – as partners in defence but also as two communities that come together to celebrate good music and good food.
“I’m really excited to have Council partner with MDC to deliver this event and celebrate a truly unique friendship between our communities.”
Head of the Music and Drama Company Chandra Mohan said::
“This 10th edition of Music and Drama Company in Rockhampton takes on a refreshed, music-festival approach, celebrating the arts, community, and the strong friendship between Singapore and central Queensland, Australia.
“Our musicians, singers, and dancers will share the stage with Australian acts, showcasing homegrown talent from both communities in a spirit of collaboration.
“We always appreciate the warmth and friendliness of Rockhampton’s people when we perform here, and this year’s show promises high-energy performances that build stronger bonds and leave a lasting impression.”
Singapore Sizzle will be held at the Rockhampton Showgrounds (entry near Robert Schwarten Pavilion) on Saturday 11 October from 10am to 9pm.
