Soaking up the summer sun, listening to home grown music and feasting at pop up restaurants along the riverfront will be the ultimate scene for the Rockhampton Region’s Australia Day celebrations in 2018.

The event, ‘Great Australian Bites’, is expanding beyond the capital cities and into regional centres, and with a strong submission selling our Region’s scenic location and local produce, Council has been successful in attracting the event to the city for the first time.

Rockhampton Region Acting Mayor Councillor Cherie Rutherford said she is thrilled Council will be able to put on a show for locals to celebrate our national day against the backdrop of our heritage landmarks and Fitzroy River.

“This is the perfect time of year to enjoy outdoor dining and music with friends and family, and we are pleased that Rockhampton has been chosen as one of the four locations in the state awarded $18,000 to throw a Great Australian Bites celebration. This funding will significantly help us put on a fantastic event for locals,” Cr Rutherford said.

“We will begin to see even more of these types of events coming to our Region as a result of the extremely successful events that we have recently hosted, and also as a result of our continued efforts to create a vibrant lifestyle while attracting and growing tourism.

“Council is also proud to award the Mount Morgan Rotary Club, Gracemere Lions Club, Friends of the Heritage Village and the Upper Ulam Recreation Grounds Inc a share in our very own $15,000 Australia Day Grant, helping these organisations throw their annual celebrations.”

The Great Australian Bites program is funded through the Queensland Government’s Department of Premier and Cabinet.
