To honour the courage and sacrifice of Australian service men and women, Rockhampton Regional Council is inviting the community to pause and reflect this Remembrance Day, Tuesday 11 November.

Council, in partnership with the 9th Battalion AIF Living History Unit, will host a Remembrance Day Service at the John Leak Memorial on Sir Raymond Huish Drive, commencing at 10:30am, with a minute’s silence observed at 11:00am following The Last Post.

Mayor Tony Williams said Remembrance Day continues to be a deeply meaningful occasion for the region.

“Each year, we come together to remember those who gave their lives in service to our country,” Mayor Williams said.

“It’s a time to reflect on the freedoms we enjoy today, and the cost borne by past generations of service men and women.”

“I encourage everyone in our community to attend and pay their respects,” Mayor Williams said.

Spokesperson for the 9th Battalion AIF Living History Unit David Bell said the Unit has contributed to many commemoration events here in Australia and overseas in Belgium, France and Turkey.

“The Unit members, most of whom are ex-service, wear the uniforms and carry the equipment of the 9th Battalion, 1st Division of the Australian Imperial Force, to keep alive the sights and sounds of the Australian Military as it was during World War 1 and World War 2,” Mr Bell said.

“Those who lost sons, daughters, siblings, other relatives or friends will never forget them – but paying respect to those who served and lost their lives is important for all of us, as time goes by.

“So many serving men and women were also wounded, some bearing terrible injuries, both physical and mental, for the rest of their lives.

“Our Nation’s identity was forged by the actions of these people, in those far off places and here on Australian soil, so we owe them and those currently serving, an ongoing debt of gratitude.

“There are lots of ways to preserve the memory of our service men and women as part of our everyday lives - attending a service and maybe waving a flag at marches shows great support and the returned personnel really appreciate it.

“A wave and a smile to those in uniform means a lot to them.”

Those wishing to attend the service are asked to RSVP by emailing mayor@rrc.qld.au  or phoning 4936 8415.

Lest we forget.
