Ahead of the launch of the region’s FOGO trial later this month, Council has carried out a bin audit in the trial areas to benchmark the program’s success.

The audits took place this week and involved bin inspections in the trial areas of Gracemere, The Range, Koongal and Frenchville.

Waste and Recycling Councillor Shane Latcham said the bin health checks will be vital in determining how successful the FOGO trial will be.

“By undertaking an audit at the start of the FOGO trial, this ensures we have data to compare to throughout the trial, so we can make a decision on the best waste services for the community,” Cr Latcham said.

“But don’t worry – this doesn’t mean we are rummaging through anyone’s waste – the audits involve a quick observation of the material towards the top of the bin and no records are kept of personal information.”

Cr Latcham said the FOGO trial, which commences next month, is an important step towards our journey of becoming a zero waste community.

“If the trial is a success, we could see up to 83% of food and garden waste diverted from landfill which is a phenomenal amount.

“Household food scraps and garden waste are a valuable resource that can be turned into compost instead of being diverted to landfill and generating greenhouse gases.

The FOGO trial will commence in October and consists of 750 residential properties.

If you aren’t part of the FOGO trial you can still have your say on the organics bin trial. All residents are encouraged to participate in a survey about the trial available here engage.rockhamptonregion.qld.gov.au
