After postponing the event last month, Rockhampton Regional Council is proud to host this year’s rescheduled National Tree Day community planting event at Yeppen Lagoon this Sunday 21 August.

Parks, Sport and Public Spaces Councillor Cherie Rutherford said National Tree Day is Australia's largest community tree planting and nature protection event, and it’s a very rewarding experience and one that our local community look forward to every year.

“It was unfortunate that we were forced to postpone our tree planting on the actual day due to the ground just being too wet and muddy,” Cr Rutherford said.

“But we can now look forward to it going ahead this weekend and it is nice to know the soil will be in great shape for the newly planted trees.

“The Yeppen Lagoon site is a wonderful example of being able to see the progress of previous planting activities and the positive legacy volunteers are helping to create.”

Water and Environmental Sustainability Councillor Donna Kirkland said there are many benefits to planting a tree.

“Tree Planting for National Tree Day is an opportunity to get out and help improve the habitat of our local wildlife, whilst also cooling and shading our unique natural areas for the benefit of our Region for years to come,” Cr Kirkland said.

“It’s also a great day for everyone who turns out. There’s a lot of benefit in knowing you’re doing something tangible to give back to your community.

“We know there were a lot of people who were disappointed that we had to postpone the last event, so we are hoping to see an excellent turn-out this Sunday.

“As well as planting a tree, participants can also learn more from some nature-based activities set up on the day and everyone who pitches in will receive a beverage voucher they can use at the Botanic Gardens Tearooms on the day.”

Divisional Councillor Drew Wickerson said he can’t wait to see the impact this year’s planting will have.

“I know a lot of people love walking along this area, but in summer it can get very hot,” Cr Wickerson said.

“A bit of shade here is going to make a huge difference, and everyone who pitches in will be able to enjoy the difference they’ve made as these trees grow over time.

“So, register now to come along and get involved. There are three community planting sessions scheduled for Yeppen Lagoon and we look forward to seeing you there.”
