Rockhampton Regional Council has been undertaking a much-needed upgrade on Farm and Alexandra Street that will improve safety and congestion while strengthening the road for heavy vehicle use.

Infrastructure Councillor Ellen Smith said Council is now in Stage 2 of the reconstruction works.

"Stage 2 of the works, which are expected to be complete in February 2023, are on track despite some recent wet weather,” said Cr Smith.

“With further development and heavy vehicles, this intersection will only get busier, which is why we need to ensure it can handle the increase in traffic and population going forward.”

"We look forward to revealing the completed upgrade by May 2023, subject to weather and site conditions.

“There is quite a lot that goes into a road reconstruction, and due to the complexity and size of the project, there will continue to be temporary road closures and other traffic changes in place as the project progresses.

"Businesses are at the heart of our community, and we really appreciate the cooperation of those impacted by this project

“I also want to remind the community that these wonderful businesses still need your support and can be accessed via the detours.

“The detours are only temporary, and this upgrade will benefit the area immensely, so we ask you to keep supporting these businesses whilst the works are being undertaken.

Divisional Councillor Donna Kirkland said the works have been broken into three more manageable stages as opposed to one full closure that would have more of an impact on road users.

“The three stages are working well due to the complexity of the works,” Cr Kirkland said.

“It is essential that people follow our road signs and detours that are in place during these works. If possible, plan your journey to avoid this area during the road works to decrease congestion.

“We know this won’t be possible for everyone, so if you still need to use the area, we recommend allowing extra time to get to where you need to be and allow for detours.

“I also want to thank the community and local businesses for their patience and understanding during these works.

“Anyone who uses this intersection will agree that it can be very busy, particularly during peak hours, and the upgrade to the intersection will go a long way in improving the safety and useability of the intersection for all.

“I know that regular users of this intersection will be very pleased to see these works progressing on schedule and will be glad for the result when they’re complete.”
