A redeveloped theatre precinct, support to deliver essential sewerage infrastructure, and water security for Mount Morgan are some of the priorities Council endorsed last week in the lead up to the federal election.

Rockhampton Region Mayor Tony Williams said that the full list of eleven priorities include projects that will meet the critical needs of our community now, and ensure that we can grow.

“The bustle of Canberra can feel a world away from us here in Rockhampton, but it really isn’t,” Mayor Williams said.

“Every level of Government should be looking to improve the lives of the people they serve, and we want to make sure that our region’s needs are being heard.

“At Council, we’re often described as the ‘service delivery’ arm of government. We build roads, we collect bins, we provide water.

“This means that we’re the closest level of government to people who live and work in our region, and we know what projects our community needs. However, we can’t always fund these projects alone.

“Last week we endorsed eleven projects that we are ready to deliver with the support of the federal government, and which we are asking candidates to commit to.

“We have a town that has run out of water and essential, catalyst infrastructure that needs to be delivered or we can’t grow. We have a theatre precinct ready to raise our cultural profile if we can first raise the funding for a business case and design.

“There is agricultural land that can be unlocked through raising Eden Bann Weir, and a new apron at the airport will bring opportunities not just to our region but to all of Central Queensland. And we can support our Central Queensland farmers with shade at the saleyards and a bridge at Glenroy.

“In the lead up to the federal election, these are the projects that we will be seeking meetings with candidates to discuss.

“They are the projects that our community needs, and that will help us grow and reach our full potential.”
