Rockhampton Zoo has launched a new activity in its community calendar this week – inviting seniors to spend a morning at the zoo.

Held Wednesday, the inaugural event welcomed 18 guests for morning tea, a hands‑on enrichment‑making session for the animals, and a relaxed visit around the enclosures.

Councillor for Parks, Sport and Public Spaces, Cherie Rutherford, said the zoo was excited to introduce another community‑focused program.

“The zoo has such a wonderful environment and it’s fantastic that we are able to encourage more people to enjoy this space,” Cr Rutherford said.

“It was wonderful to see such a great turnout this morning and to celebrate the launch of a new activity on our program list.

“These are free events, and available to any senior citizens who enjoy socialising and adding value to enriching the lives of our zoo animals.”

Zoo Director, Liz Bellward, said the enrichments made as part of the morning will now be used in upcoming activities for the animals.

“Enrichment is such an important part of caring for our animals, and it was wonderful to see guests getting hands‑on with the process,” Ms Bellward said.

“These activities help keep the animals mentally stimulated and physically active, and our visitors today have played a real role in that – which is something really special.”

“They can also be a lot of fun to make as many are often themed around events, such as Valentine’s Day and Easter, or even milestone birthdays for the animals.”

“We will be hosting these mornings regularly throughout the year, so we encourage everyone to book into an upcoming event.

“There are also a number of other activities you can sign up for, like our Community Conservation workshops and our Under 5’s activity mornings.”

Upcoming Seniors Morning Tea sessions:

  • Wednesday 25th March
  • Wednesday 27th May
  • Wednesday 29th July
  • Tuesday 15th September
  • Wednesday 25th November

Each event is held from 10am to 11:30am, at the Zoo Visitor Hub meeting rooms.
