Do you want to learn how to manage and reduce the impacts of feral pigs on your property?

The Capricorn Pest Management Group (CPMG) is holding a workshop in Kalapa at 8.30am on Monday that will give property owners the tools to record feral pig activity to help manage these pests. There are also workshops being held next week in Banana and Calliope.

Planning and Regulation Councillor Grant Mathers said the workshop will help landholders better deal with feral pigs.

“The CPMG workshop aims to assist landholders with recording and reducing the impacts of pigs on their land,” Cr Mathers said.

“We know that pigs cause environmental and agricultural damage, spread weeds, and can transmit exotic diseases such as Foot and Mouth Disease.

“Feral pigs are difficult to control because they are primarily nocturnal, breed rapidly, and have large home ranges.

“In order to effectively control these pests, we require an integrated, collaborative approach which is why Council works closely with CPMG as part of this process.”

CPMG is a not-for-profit organisation supported by Local Government funding to deliver contemporary pest management solutions for the region.

Councillor Ellen Smith, who is also treasurer of CPMG, encourages anyone with an interest in how to deal with feral pigs on their land to head along to the workshops next week.

“Just by attending one of the workshops you will go in the draw to win a pig trap so be sure to register and head along to one of the three workshops,” Cr Smith said.
