‘Tis the season to be prepared

With festive season preparations well underway, Rockhampton Regional Council is reminding residents to also be prepared for disaster season.
Rockhampton Regional Council Mayor Tony Williams said the region is currently in the heart of disaster season, facing heightened risks from cyclones, storms, floods, bushfires, and heatwaves.
“As a long-time resident, I’ve seen a fair share of disasters, and I know our community has too,” Mayor Williams said.
“Our region is no stranger to natural disasters, and we know first-hand weather conditions can shift dramatically within hours.
“A new tool available to our community that will ensure residents are informed before, during and after a disaster is the Emergency Dashboard Alerts system, which we launched earlier this month.
“This feature delivers timely and accurate updates directly to residents via email, ensuring you’re informed and prepared.
“During rapidly changing situations, the SMS feature is activated to send notifications as a text message directly to your device.”
Signing up for Emergency Dashboard Alerts is simple and could make all the difference in a critical moment. Residents can receive updates about:
- Severe weather events from BoM such as storms, heatwaves, floods, and cyclones
- Bushfire warnings from QFD
- Information on evacuation centres, recovery hubs, and support services from Council when required.
Mayor Williams said being informed helps you make decisions that can protect yourself, your family, and your property.
“Now is also a great time to revisit your emergency plans. Check your emergency kits, have a plan for your pets and livestock, and explore Council’s Emergency Dashboard to familiarise yourself with its resources,” Mayor Williams said.
“By combining tools like the dashboard alerts with practical disaster planning, we’re creating a stronger, more resilient region.”
