Rockhampton Regional Council and Capricorn Animal Aid are continuing to build on their strong partnership after meeting this week.

Planning and Regulatory Committee Chair Councillor Ellen Smith said the meeting was very encouraging with several positive outcomes.

“It was perfect timing to meet with Capricorn Animal Aid and discuss how we can best work together in the coming year, particularly as they have new office bearers,” Cr Smith said.

“We focussed on the rehoming of animals, our animal management strategy, parvo virus prevention and of course the importance of educating our community on responsible animal management – it was a very positive and constructive meeting.”

Cr Smith said responsible animal management at this time of year was crucial with the hot, humid weather having severe consequences on pets outside.

“We really want our community to understand the importance of secure properties, adequate shade or pet housing, and ample water, particularly with the temperatures souring into the late 30s this weekend,” she said.

“And of course registering your dogs and microchipping your animals is vital in the event they do get out, off the lead and then lost.”

Cr Smith said Council was progressing well on the new pound with building designs completed and funding committed leaving only the development approval process to occur.
