Work on the $325,000 skate park at Cedric Archer Park started this week with completion anticipated in mid-August.

Rockhampton Regional Council’s Parks, Recreation and Sport Committee Chair Councillor Cherie Rutherford said it was exciting to see Gracemere’s younger residents having their own contemporary space.

“I’m really pleased Gracemere’s young people will have something they can take hold of as their own cool outdoor space with the street-style skate park ready for use by mid-August,” Cr Rutherford said.

“In the early design stages, Council worked closely with consultants CONVIC and the local Gracemere community with feedback centred on a street plaza zone with obstacles mimicking features found around the city, and we think the design reflects that.

“It’s very exciting that in a couple of months our young people will have an engaging, functional and active recreation precinct including landscaping and toilet amenities.”

Cr Ellen Smith said the skate park was another element for the local community to use, which added to the overall redevelopment of Cedric Archer Park.

“The skate park will add another different zone for the community to use, along with the dedicated children’s play area, the family BBQ facilities and outdoor shelters, and sporting grounds,” Cr Smith said.

“After the skate park is completed, we’ll commence work on improving the Touch of Paradise section of the park.”

Cedric Archer Park received $502,668 in the 2014/15 budget to commence the staged development over the following three years. A further $700,000 was allocated in the 2015/16 year and $1,150,000 for the final stage in the 2016/17 financial year.
