Volunteers’ hard work recognised ahead of National Volunteer Week

Rockhampton Regional Council is putting its hard working volunteers under the spotlight to showcase the amazing work they do in the community.
With National Volunteer Week only a month away, Mayor Margaret Strelow said it was timely to give volunteers the recognition they deserve.
“There are thousands of volunteers across our region giving their time and dedication to community groups, sporting organisations and Council to enhance the social fabric of our region,” Mayor Strelow said.
“We are extremely fortunate here at Council to have scores of hardworking volunteers who come in each day and make our services what they are for the community.
“From helping prepare meals for animals at the zoo to working in the Heritage Village office, there are a diverse range of tasks our Council volunteers do and we’re really excited to share some of those stories with the rest of the community.
“In the lead up to National Volunteer Week, we’ll be putting out profiles of just some of our many wonderful volunteers to show what contribution they make to our community,” Mayor Strelow said.
One of the first volunteers to be profiled is, fittingly, one of the first people travellers and visitors to Rockhampton see when they visit our region.
Sheryl Reynolds, a businesswoman with more than 27 years’ experience, works as a volunteer at the Visitor Information Centre helping travellers when they first come to Rockhampton.
“From interstate to international travellers, I love being a volunteer at the VIC because every day is different and you meet such a wide variety of people,” Ms Reynolds said.
“Showing off our whole region and telling people where the attractions are is a big part of the job as well as helping out with getting the brochures ready as well as the souvenirs we sell here at the VIC – our baby chimp toy is a big seller at the moment.
“After working in business for a long time, I love volunteering here at the VIC and I would encourage anyone interested in volunteering to sign up because it’s as rewarding as it is fun,” Ms Reynolds said.
To volunteer at Council, call 07 4932 9000 and ask for a Volunteer Request Application Form or visit Council’s website.
National Volunteer Week will be held from 21-27 May 2018.
