Upgrades coming to busy Allenstown intersections

Rockhampton Regional Council is set to commence upgrades to the Upper Dawson, Canning, and Derby Street intersections this week to improve safety and traffic flow.
The Australian Government has committed over $900,000 to install a raised safety platform, channelised right turns and centre traffic islands under the Black Spot Program.
The project will also include upgraded pedestrian crossings and refuge areas, pavement repairs, asphalt overlay, and line marking.
Works will begin on Sunday, 7 April and are expected to be complete by the end of June.
Rockhampton Region Mayor Tony Williams said he is pleased to see the upgrade commencing.
“After several incidents reported at these intersections over the years, this area was identified as a high-crash zone and I am relieved to see this project get underway from this Sunday,” Mayor Tony Williams said.
“Thanks to Black Spot funding, Council can improve safety, accessibility and address traffic congestion that has become increasingly problematic.
“The right-hand turn at the Derby and Upper Dawson Road intersection will be removed with traffic only flowing left from that point and there will be a formalised right-hand turn on Canning Street into Upper Dawson Road with a dedicated turning lane into the Allenstown Hotel and Dan Murphy’s precinct.
“As this is a busy thoroughfare, night works will be carried out for certain stages of the project, including the first two weeks, where the bulk of the work will be completed.
“While we understand that this may present some challenges for residents, these measures have been carefully planned to minimise disruption to daily traffic flow and to ensure the safety of both workers and the community.”
Throughout Beef Week and the Rockhampton Show, roadworks will be suspended, with some finishing touches left to complete after these events.
“We appreciate the support of local businesses during this time and will work diligently to complete the project as efficiently as possible,” Mayor Williams said.
The nightworks will be carried out between 7pm-5am with traffic control measures in place.
