Time to get ready for wet season
Published on 12 October 2017
Rockhampton Regional Council is urging residents to get ready for the upcoming wet season with council officers out in force ensuring the region’s flood mitigation measures are prepared and ready to go.
With the potential for heavy falls this weekend, Chair of the Local Disaster Management Group, Councillor Tony Williams, said now was the perfect time for residents to start getting ready too.
“It actually is Get Ready week at the moment and our region knows all too well how important it is to be prepared in case disaster strikes,” Cr Williams said.
“Council is doing its bit to make sure our prevention and mitigation measures are tested and ready to be deployed, with crews starting to check backflow prevention valves, pumping stations, stormwater drains and our sewage network in the lead up to this year’s wet season.
“Fitzroy River Water has also completed the annual inspection of Mount Morgan No. 7 dam, and has reviewed the North Rockhampton Flood Mitigation Area and other related flood preparation and response actions to ensure they are current.
“We can only do so much though, and that’s why it’s critical all of our region’s residents do their own preparations – clean up your yards, make sure your gutters are clear and take the time to ensure your property is ready.
“The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting potential heavy falls for our region this weekend as well as releasing the forecast of the predicted cyclone season, so now is the time for our residents to start preparing,” Cr Williams said.
