CQ Bushfire Project

The 2018 fires which threatened Gracemere, Kabra, Stanwell and Alton Downs are well and truly gone, however the event is burned into memory for our community.

Rockhampton Regional Libraries is currently working on a project to capture that memory, and is inviting you to be part of this larger local history.

The Recording Resilient Stories of Today for the Future: CQ Bushfire Project is jointly funded under the Commonwealth/State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements.

Communities Spokesperson Councillor Drew Wickerson encouraged everyone who was affected by the fires to submit something to this living history collection.

“Projects like this are important for so many reasons,” said Cr Wickerson.

“They help us to form a record of our community that goes beyond facts, dates and statistics. This collection will reveal how people felt, and how our community came together.

“The project will also help us better understand the struggles individuals faced during the fires, and contribute to our understanding of disasters in our Region.

“You can make a submission by recording a short audio or video clip on your phone, or sending in any photos you have from the event.

“If you would like to use your experience as a source of creative inspiration, we would also love to receive written reflections, short stories, or artwork you create.

“We want to hear as many stories as possible from as many people as possible so we create a complete picture of the event.

“Everything we capture throughout the project will be recorded as part of the regionally significant CQ Collection at the Rockhampton History Centre.

“If you would like to find out more about the project, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with our fantastic library staff.”

Submissions can either be emailed to libraries@rrc.qld.gov.au or posted to Rockhampton Regional Libraries, PO Box 1860, before Tuesday 30 June.
