CQ Bushfire Project
Are you from a community group, business or property west of Rockhampton that was affected by the November 2018 CQ bushfire event?
Rockhampton Regional Libraries are collecting the stories of people who experienced the bushfire event first-hand. These will form an important social historical record for future generations to learn from.
Every person who was affected by the event had a different experience relating to the fires and we are asking the community to share those experiences with us.
Residents of the Gracemere, Kabra, Stanwell, Alton Downs and surrounding areas have shared stories of shock at the suddenness of the fires, the impact on businesses, homes, individuals and families, and their experiences of being evacuated. Many people have vivid memories of the relief when the fires were contained and their appreciation for those who fought the blaze.
As part of our region’s history, we are keen to hear from as many people as possible so we can record what our community faced. These stories, memories, photos and pictures will help us better understand what individuals experienced that day and inform a plan for the whole community moving forward. The records will also become part of our regionally significant archive collection at the Rockhampton History Centre, located in the Southside Library.
The CQ Bushfire Project: Recording Resilient Stories of Today for the Future is jointly funded under the Commonwealth/State Disaster Recovery Arrangements.
How can you tell your story?
All ages are invited to take part in this special memorial project.
Write, record or draw your stories and memories of the November 2018 bushfire event in your local area. The stories will be deposited in our CQ Collection at the Rockhampton History Centre and may be used as part of a digital package for future generations to learn from.
Library staff are happy to help with remote technical support to complete your story. Feel free to call 4936 8043 or email firstname.lastname@example.org for assistance.
How can I be involved?
We would like as many different types of formats as possible included in our archival compilation. As we are all currently staying at home due to COVID-19 restrictions, this is the ideal time to write, record or draw your experiences for our CQ Bushfire Project. Some suggestions are:
- Record a short audio or video clip on your smartphone or device
- Write a short story about your experiences
- Submit photos of the view from your property during the fire emergency
- Write a few paragraphs about what was happening and how you felt during the fire emergency
- Draw a picture of the people who were affected by the evacuation
Making a submission
