Rockhampton Zoo is celebrating a special new arrival this week – Charlie, a seven‑year‑old koala who has just made his way to Central Queensland.

Councillor for Parks, Sport and Public Spaces Cherie Rutherford said the zoo team are thrilled to welcome its newest resident.

“Charlie joined the Rockhampton Zoo family on Monday afternoon and is already settling into his new space well,” Cr Rutherford said.

“He comes to us from Wildlife HQ on the Sunshine Coast, where he received excellent care after being rescued as a young koala following a car strike.

“Because of his injuries, Charlie lost one eye and wasn’t able to return to the wild, but despite his challenging start, and thanks to his ongoing care, he is very calm and gentle.”

Rockhampton Zoo Director, Liz Bellward, said Rockhampton Zoo is excited to support him as he settles into his next chapter.

“It’s wonderful to welcome Charlie, particularly after the recent loss of Shaun, who had been part of our koala family for eight years,” Ms Bellward said.

“Charlie has a really steady and relaxed presence, and our keepers are already enjoying getting to know him.

“We’re looking forward to introducing him to the community today and know many will love him as much as we do.”

Ms Bellward said Charlie’s arrival also brings a powerful message about conservation for visitors.

“Charlie’s journey shows just how important wildlife rescue and rehabilitation are,” she said.

“Sharing stories like his helps us highlight the need for koala conservation, habitat protection and awareness of the challenges these animals face in the wild.”

Koala Keeper Talks recommence at Rockhampton Zoo today and will be available each day at 3.40pm.

Rockhampton Zoo is open seven days a week, from 9am until 4.15pm. Entry is free.
