A new puppy registration fee has been introduced to encourage early registration of puppies with Rockhampton Regional Council.
Rockhampton Region Mayor Margaret Strelow said the puppy fee was one of a suite of measures approved by Council this morning encouraging pet owners to register their dogs.
“The old conundrum about needing to register a new puppy within three months - and yet some vets and owners preferring to delay desexing until after six months, has led to a messy process of registration fees and refunds,” Mayor Strelow said. Chair of Health and Compliance Committee Councillor Ellen Smith said the new fee would be set at $30 for the first year and would encourage early registration to help the council find the owners if the dog wanders.
“We hope to see the community really take advantage of this reduced fee which is a very small price to pay to ensure your dog can be returned to you, and an even smaller price to pay when compared to a fine for not having your dog registered,” Cr Ellen Smith said. The new puppy registration fee will come into effect as of Monday 19 October 2015.
