The festive season is finally here, and Rockhampton Regional Council would like to wish the community a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

While the majority of our offices and services will be closed from 3pm on 23 December 2022 and opening again on Tuesday 3 January 2023, some of our teams will continue to work throughout the holiday period.

The Zoo will continue to welcome visitors every day apart from Christmas itself, and our dedicated team in waste and recycling will still be collecting from the kerbside as normal.

Mayor Tony Williams said that with the festive season upon us, it’s a great opportunity to take a moment to reflect.

“Despite some significant setbacks this year with the loss of the Federal Assistance Grants and our battle to win back the northern suburbs, there have been some notable major milestones worth recognising,” Mayor Williams said.

“We saw the opening of the Rockhampton Museum of Art which has proven not only to be a major drawcard for visitors to our Region but solidified Rockhampton as the cultural hub of Central Queensland.

“At the Airport, we saw the completion of the terminal redevelopment and have witnessed the impressive structure that is the Alliance Maintenance and Repair Facility rising from the ground up.

“We have worked hard to advocate for our region at the state and federal level which has resulted in key projects getting the green light, including the Mount Morgan Pipeline which we’ll be breaking ground on early next year.

“Our whole community pulled together to make our voice heard on delays to the Rockhampton Ring Road, and the recent announcement that it will now go ahead in 2023 goes to show how powerful that voice can be.

“It was also another great year on the events calendar with Rare Spares Rockynats, Capricon and the Rocky River festival delighting crowds of locals and visitors alike.

“When the 2021/2022 financial year wrapped up in June, we had delivered over $99 million worth of capital works projects, and this financial year we’re continuing to invest heavily in our region’s future with catalyst water and sewerage infrastructure.

“Our annual goods and services spend analysis showed that of the $165.5 million spent by Council in total, a whopping $122.8 million has been spent within the Rockhampton Region.

“In the year ahead, we will undoubtedly face challenges like we always do – but I am also confident that, as always, we will face them head on together as a strong community.

“On behalf of all Councillors and staff, I would like to wish everyone a happy, healthy and safe Christmas and New Year.”
