Korean Horseman School to send budding jockey’s to Rockhampton

Students from Korea’s Horseman High School will soon be off and racing in Rockhampton when a pilot vocational program comes to Regional Queensland for the first time.

An MOU was today signed between Rockhampton Regional Council, The Rockhampton Jockey Club, Smart Career Centre and Korea’s Horseman High School that will see eight Korean students participate in a three month vocational program studying English as well as theory and practical training at the Rockhampton Jockey Club.

Rockhampton Region Mayor Margaret Strelow said attracting the program to Rockhampton was a direct result of Council’s strong focus on building new trade and investment opportunities in Asia.

“Today I am delighted to welcome Korea’s Horseman High School who will for the first time bring this program outside of metropolitan areas as they choose to send their students to Rockhampton,” Mayor Strelow said.

“This is a great coup for Rockhampton, we are very excited by the new opportunities this presents both economically and in terms of raising our Region’s profile in international education.”

Since 2011 the Horseman High School has sent their senior high school students to Victoria and Ipswich for training. This year, their hands-on training will be spent at the Callaghan Park stables and CEO of the Rockhampton Jockey Club, Tony Fenlon, said the club welcomed the idea with open arms.

“The club is very much looking forward to welcoming the students to Rockhampton and showing them the types of systems and procedures that the local trainers use in training thoroughbreds,” Mr Fenlon said.

“The students will be doing the role of a stablehand which involves handling, washing and leading horses as well as track work in the morning, all with the supervision of our experienced local trainers.

“I am stoked to see this program come to Rockhampton instead of down south, it’s great for the region that we can strike up these partnerships with other countries.”
