Important reminder that road safety doesn’t take a holiday

Rockhampton Regional Council is reminding the community that road safety doesn’t take a holiday over the festive period.
Infrastructure Councillor Marika Taylor said in the lead up to Christmas and New Year break, motorists should expect the roads to become busier as people travel to see loved ones.
“With the extra traffic on our roads, it’s vital that everyone takes a little extra care,” Cr Taylor said.
“The festive season should be remembered for joy, not tragedy, therefore road safety is everyone’s responsibility.
“The figures we’ve seen this year are sobering reminders of how quickly things can change.”
Simple actions like slowing down, staying focused, buckling up, and never driving under the influence can make all the difference.
“The choices we make behind the wheel can save lives, as well as planning ahead and resting when you need,” Cr Taylor said.
“Drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians all share the same roads. By showing patience and respect, we can make sure everyone gets home safely.
“This holiday season let’s look out for one another, every safe journey is a gift to our families and our community.”
Capricornia District Superintendent Mark Burgess said the community can expect to see police anywhere and at any time throughout the Christmas period.
“Throughout December, police will be running high visibility traffic enforcement to minimise road trauma during the busy summer school holidays period,” Superintendent Burgess said.
“Speeding, driving without a seatbelt, or whilst impaired, fatigued or distracted, can have devastating consequences.
“Make sure you take breaks if you're headed on long trips, and drive to the conditions.
“As we head into a season of rainy and unpredictable weather, we also urge all road users to remember that if it's flooded, forget it.
“By working together with the community, we can all play a part in making our roads safer for everyone this Christmas.”
