Rockhampton’s Heritage Village’s historical streetscape is set to get a new addition when the old Hospital Post Office soon relocates to the Village.

Due to be demolished as part of the hospital’s new multi-level car park, the Hospital Board chose to gift the building to the Friends of the Heritage Village, adding to its township of the Region’s yesteryear.

Rockhampton Regional Council’s Chair of Communities Councillor Rose Swadling said the old Post Office will be the perfect addition to the Heritage Village which already houses a range of historical buildings including Anderson’s City Printing building, church, general store, cottage and blacksmith building.

“The Post office is part of our heritage and is an extremely fitting addition to the Heritage Village’s streetscape, which is something we have continued to expand over time as historical buildings like this become available to us,” Cr Swadling said.

President of the Friends of the Rockhampton Heritage Village, John McBow, said the association was thrilled to be gifted the building and has raised funds to cover the relocation and removal of asbestos.

“We are absolutely delighted include the Post Office to the Heritage Village, it is a piece of history that we proud to preserve,” Mr McBow said.

“At this point we haven’t been able to determine the age of the building. We estimate it was built around the 1940’s, however if anyone in the community has first-hand knowledge of its origins, we would encourage them to get in touch with us at the Heritage Village.

“Bearing in mind that besides being an exciting place for children to visit, the Heritage Village is also an educational institution and this building will fill a void.

“Children and young adults will be able to walk into an environment where no-one carries a mobile phone. They will be in an environment where they had to leave the house and walk to a phone booth, remembering to take coins to make a call.”
