Great community turnout for Mount Morgan water supply meeting

Rockhampton Regional Council has thanked the Mount Morgan community for sharing their passion to see a sustainable long term water supply for the town.

Council held a community meeting at the local School of Arts Hall last night, after Queensland Health restrictions prevented a previous meeting from going ahead late last month.

Mayor Tony Williams was pleased to see the strong turnout by residents who were keen to discuss options for the long term water security of Mount Morgan.

“I really want to thank all those who attended and want you to know that we are listening to you, and are committed to working with you into the future on this important issue,” Mayor Williams said.

“Whether it rains tomorrow, next week, or in the weeks after that, we are putting Mount Morgan’s water security on the table until a solution is reached.

Water and Environmental Sustainability Councillor Donna Kirkland said the meeting provided an update on the current water trucking and shared information about potential long term solutions.

“With water trucking now on 12 trucks a day, and getting up to 20 within the next two weeks, we are expectant that this will address those issues we have been receiving about the taste and smell of the water currently,” Cr Kirkland said.

“The long term options were discussed in the first half of the meeting and the second half was devoted to answering as many questions as we could on the topics that received the most interest.

“I want to remind everyone that all questions were noted and will be responded to in the next edition of the Argus and on our website next week.

“Due to the excellent contributions in the room and variety of questions asked we now have quite a lot of information to sift through, so please bear with us as we provide answers for each.

Divisional Councillor Cherie Rutherford said she is keen for everyone to have their say.

“While there were close to 150 attendees, we did have to cap the numbers due to COVID restrictions,” Cr Rutherford said.

“We have a small number of residents who registered and were unable to attend this meeting, so the meeting was recorded and will be posted to our Facebook page.

“We also will be in touch with those who missed out on the meeting, to see if we need to hold another smaller meeting or if they’re happy being able to see the recording and the questions and answers being published.

“Communication is important as we move forward together with this issue.

“We will continue to make all information available on our website, writing to residents directly and attendees will soon be able to fill in a survey to provide feedback on the meeting.

“The survey will be emailed to attendees. If you didn’t provide an email address either email or pop into the Customer Service Centre on Hall Street and they can help you fill out the survey.

“I want to encourage all Mount Morgan residents to please keep the lines of communication open. We will keep updating, as well as sending updates by post, but if residents have any questions or concerns you can always call us on 4932 9000.”
