This week Rockhampton Regional Council will start works at the East Street and Stanley Street intersection in preparation for the construction of a single lane roundabout.

Thanks to nearly $1.1 million in funding provided by the Australian Government’s Black Spot Program, Council can focus on improving community safety in this area.

Rockhampton Regional Council Mayor Tony Williams said this project is necessary to keep our roads and residents safe.

“We really appreciate the Australian Government’s funding for this project,” Mayor Williams said.

“Blackspot funding allows us to focus on the safety of our community and improving our roads.

“I want to thank the community in advance for their patience whilst we undertake these essential works.”

Infrastructure Councillor Ellen Smith is looking forward to seeing the works at this intersection occur and this area becoming safer.

“These works have been a long time coming, and we are keen to get started,” Cr Smith said.

“You will start to see Council crews in the area this week to start works. The project is estimated to take around four months to complete, subject to weather and ground conditions.

“As well as the construction of a roundabout, crews will also construct medians and pedestrian refuges, upgrade street lighting, install new asphalt surfacing and undertake minor landscaping.

“Our design team did a great job preparing the plans for these works.

"A range of technical obstacles and requirements were in play when undertaking the design including heavy vehicle movements through the area, property access points and stormwater management.

“Our crews have spoken with local businesses in the area and have determined a plan for the works to accommodate the local businesses day to day operations.

"The design team also used streetscaping elements incorporated in the CBD to improve the appeal of the area whilst ensuring its functionality is maintained.

“I appreciate the community’s support for these works and want to thank them in advance for their patience.

Divisional Councillor Drew Wickerson said he is happy to see these works get underway.

“This has been a problem intersection for a while now, and thanks to funding from the Australian Government, we will be able to mitigate the road incidents in this area,” Cr Wickerson said.

“I want to thank the community for their understanding while we undertake these works.

"We know there will be some impact on the local businesses and road users, but we will aim to minimise the interruption.

"If you have any concerns or questions during this time, please reach out to Council."
