The searing temperatures, flurry of hail storms, fires and tornadoes across the state recently are a fitting reminder that residents should prepare for disaster season.

Rockhampton Region Mayor Tony Williams said it is shaping up to be a turbulent season despite only just beginning.

“Our Region is definitely no stranger to a volatile disaster season, but if there is one thing we know from experience, being prepared can make a huge difference,” Mayor Williams said.

“With the recent severe weather, both here and throughout the State, it’s crucial that we all take the time to get ready now and ensure we have everything set for the remainder of the season.

“Preparing is critical for reducing damage to property and avoiding injury – but it is also critical to in how we manage stress leading into an event and reducing community impacts during the recovery phase.

“Not only should you build your emergency kits, but you should understand what can happen during and after a disaster.

“As they say, information is key. I’d encourage everyone to head over to Council’s Emergency Dashboard for resources on how to prepare.

“Our Disaster Management team have also put together some information packs which are available at a number of locations across the Region.

“Being prepared not only assists you and your household during emergencies but is a way to support the local SES who receive call outs during a disaster.

“The SES always welcomes new volunteers. If you want to learn new skills, assist your community and residents, prepare, and respond during emergencies, I encourage you to join.

“Whether you are a local who has experienced a natural disaster here before or you have just moved to the area and don’t know what to expect, preparation is critical.

“We can’t afford to be on the back foot during an emergency, don’t wait for an impending or actual disaster before you start your preparation,” said Mayor Williams.
