Rockhampton Regional Council is strengthening its commitment to community safety and animal welfare, with a $5,000 contribution to RSPCA Queensland’s Desex My Pet campaign in 2026.

The campaign, formerly named Operation Wanted, is a national desexing initiative that partners local councils with RSPCA and participating, local veterinary clinics.

As part of Desex My Pet, pet owners can access a 20 per cent discount on desexing services by registering online with RSCPA and booking with the Region’s participating veterinary clinics.

Planning and Regulation Councillor Grant Mathers said the campaign plays a vital role in helping residents better manage their pets responsibly.

“Responsible pet ownership is about more than just providing basic care, it’s about ensuring their safety and wellbeing for the sake of the entire community,” Cr Mathers said.

“Our Local Laws team is kept busy year-round managing unwanted, aggressive, and roaming animals, much of which can be reduced if pet owners play their part.

“Proactive measures like desexing are just one of the ways we can support our Local Laws teams and our community.

“Desexing pets also prevents unplanned litters, ensuring they remain in safe, stable homes rather than entering our Animal Management Centre.”

RSPCA Queensland Vet Dr Sam Strong said there are many unwanted and embarrassing pet behaviours that desexing can help improve.

“When we see female dogs suffering from life-threatening conditions like pyometra, alongside thousands of cats entering our shelters every year, it’s heartbreaking to know that many of these cases could have been prevented through desexing,” Dr Strong said.

“Desexing not only protects animals from serious health issues but also prevents unexpected litters that can place further strain on already overwhelmed shelters.”

Cap Vet Surgery in Allenstown has proudly supported RSPCA’s desexing program since it commenced in 2015.

Cap Vet Surgery Practice Manager Ms Rochelle Vycke said their team is passionate about providing this opportunity to the community.

“Each year we see a strong response from local pet owners committed to responsible care,” Ms Vycke said.

“Together with RSPCA, we’re making a lasting difference to the health and wellbeing of our pets.”

Operation Wanted runs from 1 June to 31 August, giving pet owners three months to book with participating vets and access discounted services.
