Celebrate Children’s Book Week with a Big Book Giveaway

Rockhampton Regional Libraries are celebrating 80 years of Children’s Book Week with a Big Book Giveaway this Wednesday, 20 August.
Rockhampton Regional Council Mayor Tony Williams said the Big Book Giveaway is a fantastic initiative taking place across all four of the region’s libraries.
“As part of the First 5 Forever early literacy initiative, we are giving away a range of free books for children aged zero to five years,” Mayor Williams said.
“The first five years are critical to a child’s literacy journey and lay the foundation for a lifelong love of learning.
“Our book giveaways are a favourite with families across the region, because every child who receives a book is walking away with an adventure in their hands.”
This year’s Book Week theme, Book an Adventure, was brought to life by artist Jess McGeachin and captures the spirit of exploration and imagination that comes from diving into a good book.
Communities, Culture and Heritage and Deputy Mayor Drew Wickerson said the week is one of the most exciting on the library calendar.
“Children’s Book Week is such a special time of year because it’s all about celebrating the joy of reading and the incredible journeys a story can take us on,” Cr Wickerson said.
“The Book an Adventure theme perfectly captures that feeling of opening a book and being transported somewhere new, whether that’s to a faraway land, a different time, or even deep under the sea.
“It’s also a great reminder that our libraries are more than just shelves of books, they’re great community spaces for the whole region to enjoy.”
Library staff will be getting into the spirit too by dressing up and showcasing wonderful literature that ties into this year’s theme.
“Every year we see the excitement in schools across the region with kids proudly parading their costumes, and we’re thrilled to extend that energy into our libraries too,” Cr Wickerson said.
“If you’re stuck for costume ideas, a quick visit to your local library could be just the spark you need.
“Whether you’re a regular visitor, haven’t been in a while or are keen to become a member, Book Week is the perfect time to drop in, join the fun, and take home a story or two.”
Other activities taking place throughout the week include:
- Activity booklets and colouring tables
- Games and puzzles
- Scavenger hunts
- LEGO® building stations
- Console gaming zones
Children’s Book Week runs from 16-23 August 2025.
The free book giveaway will take place at Southside, Northside, Gracemere, and Mount Morgan libraries during opening hours on Wednesday, 20 August.
