Brighter walks ahead

 A newly completed project by Rockhampton Regional Council is proving a bright idea for not only pedestrians, but also for Mother Nature.

12 new solar powered streetlights have been installed along Moores Creek Road and Kerrigan Street near the underpass, through a project totalling $22,000.   

Communities Portfolio spokesperson, Councillor Drew Wickerson, said the new lights are a welcome addition and will have immediate and ongoing benefits.

“These state of the art solar powered lights mean people can now take a safer stroll around this area,” Cr Wickerson said.

“We had received a few requests for this so I am really pleased we’ve been able to deliver what the community asked for.

“The fact that they are solar powered means this is not only an improvement to community safety, but also to our environmental footprint.

“The $22,000 to pay for this project came from the revenue we receive from Telco for having their equipment on Council land – we take this money and invest it right back into the community.”

Divisional Councillor Neil Fisher said it would open up more walking opportunities in the area.

“It’s no secret that I am a big fan of walking around the region and exploring new routes!

“Adding the lights here will make this yet another route that can be enjoyed any time of the day.”
