Council is exploring a new dog friendly off leash park for Gracemere and is inviting community feedback on the proposed fenced area at Cedric Archer Park.

Parks, Sport and Public Spaces Councillor Cherie Rutherford said the space aimed to meet the community’s desire for more accessible and fenced dog off leash areas.

“Cedric Archer Park is a much-loved regional space, and we already see many residents enjoying the park with their four-legged friends,” Cr Rutherford said.

“We’ve heard feedback over the years that a fenced dog off leash area would make the park safer and more enjoyable for everyone, particularly given the high level of informal dog use already occurring.

“This proposal has been carefully developed to fit within the park’s layout, protect existing vegetation, and include fencing given its proximity to sporting fields and nearby roads.

“The proposed 2,200m² of space would include seating, water bubblers, waste disposal facilities and dual-lock gates.

“We want to make sure the design works for the whole community, and that’s why we’re encouraging residents, park users, and nearby neighbours to share their thoughts during this consultation period.”

Divisional Councillor Edward Oram said the proposal presented an opportunity to enhance recreational spaces for the growing Gracemere community.

“Gracemere is growing, and it’s important that our recreational spaces grow with it,” Cr Oram said.

"While we have an off leash area at nearby Remembrance Park, the feedback we’ve received is that a modern, fenced facility at Cedric Archer Park would be a massive win for local families and pet owners.

“We recognise that people use Cedric Archer Park in different ways, and some dog owners prefer walking off leash along footpaths rather than using fenced areas.

“That’s why community feedback is so important - it helps us understand how this space is currently used and how a fenced dog off leash area could best complement the park.

“The survey is quick to complete, and your feedback will help determine whether the off leash area goes ahead - so don’t forget to have your say!”

Community feedback is open now and will close on Sunday, 8 March 2026.
