Volunteers in the region have today been praised by Rockhampton Regional Council, with Communities Chair Councillor Rose Swadling describing them as extraordinary.

This week is National Volunteer Week and Cr Swadling said the theme, ‘Give a Little. Change a lot’ made perfect sense.

“Sometimes people don’t realise just what an impact a few hours of their time can have.

“I have personally seen the huge difference those who volunteer with Council at places like the Zoo, the Visitor Information Centre, the Heritage Village, and the Pilbeam Theatre make.

“We simply wouldn’t be able to offer the same standard of service to our residents and visitors without them. I would encourage anyone considering volunteering to get in touch and find out more.

“The generous people across our community who volunteer their time and expertise are extraordinary, and really do make our region special. I consider them the jewels in our region’s crown and personally thank them for all of their hard work. I look forward to the surprise treat we will be sharing with them during River Festival too.”

Frank Fedrick says volunteering at the Rockhampton Zoo has taught him a lot.

“I have been here for going on three years now, and have learned so much about the animals.

“The Zoo is a really wonderful and happy place, especially when children are here during the school holidays. It’s a real asset to Rockhampton.

“Volunteering has been a great way to keep in touch with people as I get older too.”

Council is always looking for more volunteers: call 4932 9000 and ask for a Volunteer Request Application Form, or visit Council’s volunteer page.

National Volunteer Week runs from May 21 to 27, and is the annual celebration to acknowledge the generous contribution of Australia’s six million volunteers.
