Rockhampton Regional Council has partnered with online fishing publication CAST Magazine to encourage more fishers to sign up to the Voluntary Code of Practice.

Chair of Council’s Infrastructure Committee Councillor Tony Williams said a video launched on Council’s Facebook today sets out the four main aims of the Code.

“Maintain health fish stocks by taking a feed, not a fridgeful; respect for the waterways; proper handling of fish to maximise catch and release survival rates and zero tolerance of illegal fishing are what the code is all about,” Cr Williams said.

“Since being launched in October last year we’ve had a fantastic response from the fishing community and we’re really proud to announce that CAST Magazine is the latest pledge to the cause.

“We want as many people as possible to take the pledge because at the end of the day the more we look after our fish stocks the better the fishing and the better the outcomes for the economy.

“Rockhampton is fast cementing its reputation as the Home of Barramundi and to have the support of CAST Magazine is fantastic.

“We really are starting to see a buzz generated around Rockhampton’s fishing scene with four charters now operating on the river and countless videos hitting social media of trophy Barramundi and King Threadfin catches.

“Council is building on this momentum to attract more tourists to our region because there really is no other place where you can fly-in, check-in and hit the water in less than an hour like you can here.

“To give people more of an idea about what the Voluntary Code of Practice is all about, Council and CAST Fishing have produced a video which is up on Council’s facebook page now, so make sure you check it out and sign up today,” Cr Williams said.
