Thousands of under 8s Romped in the Park in Rocky!
Published on 23 May 2025
The laughter of children and families was the highlight of the day as thousands attended the annual Romp in the Park event for Under 8s week at the Rockhampton Cricket grounds today.
Rockhampton Regional Council Mayor Tony Williams said the event has been a must-do activity for young families on the Rockhampton calendar for more than twenty years and this year’s celebration was no different.
“Council is very proud to support the event with $2,000 from the Community Assistance Program to assist the fantastic volunteers and community organisations who come together every year to hold Romp in the Park,” Mayor Williams said.
“The event offers a wonderful opportunity for parents and children to spend quality time together, with a huge range of play-based experiences on offer.
“Council’s Community Assistance Program aims to support non-profit organisations to hold events that enhance the community’s wellbeing and contribute to our economy, and Romp in the Park is a perfect example of this.
“Applications open on 26 May for Round 1 of the Program for the 2025-26 financial year and we encourage all community organisations to consider their eligibility so that we can work together to build a stronger Rockhampton region.”
Romp in the Park is organised by a working group of community and local organisations including, The Smith Family, Child and Family Centre, Rockhampton Regional Libraries, Playgroup Queensland, ACT for Kids, Hippy, Global Sky Education and the Department of Education.
The 2025 theme for Under 8s week was ‘Unleashing Scientific Thinking Through Play’, with more than 40 community organisations involved to bring the theme to life for children as part of fun, play-based learning experiences.
Rockystart Inc Secretary Joanne Young said around three thousand families, children and early learning groups were expected for the event which offered parents the chance to be actively involved in their child’s early learning and to connect with other families, educators and community services.
“Some of the activities included sensory and nature play, storytelling and puppet shows, obstacle courses, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island storytelling, music and dance and visits from emergency services.
“With parents and children sharing these experiences it helps children feel secure, valued and connected to their families, boosting their confidence and communication skills.
“Romp in the Park plays a significant role in our region.
“It embodies the belief that "it takes a village to raise a child," and we’re proud to be building that village for Rockhampton’s children and families—one filled with connection, joy, learning, and support.”
