Despite a concerted campaign from Livingstone Shire Council to stop this month’s public vote on the Northern Suburbs going ahead, Rockhampton Regional Council has today been notified by the Deputy Premier the vote will proceed as planned.

Rockhampton Regional Council Mayor Tony Williams said the State Government had done the right thing in honouring its election commitment to the people of the Rockhampton Region and Livingstone Shire.

“We have always said that people’s voices matter and their vote matters so I’m incredibly happy to see this process continue,” Mayor Williams said.

“The people of the Rockhampton Region have never been given a say on this matter before. We were excluded from the poll at de-amalgamation and this is our opportunity to be heard.

“The Northern Suburbs have also voted three times to leave Livingstone Shire and this is our chance to help them get home.

“It is more important than ever that you vote ‘yes’ later this month. A vote yes will secure the future of our region and gives our community the room we need to grow.

“No matter where you live in our region, when you receive your postal ballot including the online option later this month, vote ‘yes’ and make it fairer for everyone,” Mayor Williams said.
