Take your water knowledge to new heights this Saturday

Experience the rare opportunity to walk 15 metres above Rockhampton’s lifeblood, the Fitzroy River, as Council hosts its Barrage Open Day this Saturday.

Visitors will step behind the scenes of one of Rockhampton's most important assets, walking across the barrage while learning how water from the Fitzroy River is captured, managed and delivered to communities across the Region.

The free community event will also feature interactive displays, live music, hands-on activities, competitions and information stalls.

Water Councillor, Edward Oram, said the day offers something for all ages.

"We're excited to welcome the community back to the barrage this weekend for a great family day out," Cr Oram said.

"This is a fantastic chance to follow the journey of water from our mighty Fitzroy to our taps and learn about the people and processes that keep water flowing to our community every day.

"Of course, one of the highlights of the day will be the guided tours of the Fitzroy River Barrage, which offer behind-the-scenes access to infrastructure that is normally closed to the public.

“Many people pass the barrage every day, but few have the chance to see it up close and gain a different perspective on the important role it has played in our community for more than 50 years."

As well as providing a unique look at the Region's water supply, the Open Day will encourage residents to think differently about their own water use.

Environmental Sustainability Councillor, Elliot Hilse, said attendees will leave with plenty of practical tips to help save water in everyday life.

“This open day is all about helping our local residents become more water wise and understanding how important water is in our region,” Cr Hilse said.

“Hopefully people will leave with a greater appreciation of this resource - where it comes from and how to use it responsibly.

“Small changes can make a big difference, and that’s exactly what I’m hoping people will take away from this event.”
