Take simple steps to check your pool is compliant

Pool Safety

With warmer days on the way, Rockhampton Regional Council is reminding residents to make pool safety a top priority as we dive into the swimming season.

Planning and Regulation Councillor Grant Mathers said now is the perfect time to check that your pool – whether it’s inflatable, inground, or above-ground – meets safety standards.

“Regardless of size, every pool can pose a danger if the proper precautions aren’t taken,” Cr Mathers said.

Under legislation, any pool that can hold water to a depth of more than 300mm, has a volume of more than 2000 litres, or features a filtration system requires a compliant pool fence.

All swimming pools and spas in Queensland including the pool fencing must have a building permit prior to construction and be registered with the Queensland Building & Construction Commission (QBCC).

Cr Mathers highlighted that inflatable pools remain a particular concern, as their temporary nature often leads to complacency increasing the risk of drowning.

“We frequently see people neglect fencing requirements or forgetting to get necessary permits for pools, which heightens the risk, especially for children," Cr Mathers said.

“Active supervision is vital, never leave children unattended near water, no matter how small the pool.”

Cr Mathers reminded all pool owners to review their pool safety measures by checking fencing, ensuring gates close properly, and removing any potential climbing hazards from the pool area.

“Swimming is a fantastic way to stay cool and active, but safety must come first – for kids and adults alike,” Cr Mathers said.

For those without a backyard pool, Council-run facilities like Northside Pool, Southside Pool, Mount Morgan Pool, Cedric Archer Water Play, and Kershaw Gardens Water Play offer safe and fun ways to beat the heat.

Follow these safety guidelines to ensure a safe and enjoyable summer by the pool:

  • Always supervise children in or around pools or spas.
  • Make sure your pool is fenced, and the fence complies with pool safety standards.
  • Install a striker or latch to make the gate self-closing and ensure it self-closes every time.
  • Adjust your gate to ensure it opens away from the pool area.
  • Remove climbable objects away from the pool fence to prevent children climbing into the pool area.
  • Enrol your child in water awareness and learn-to-swim classes.
  • Learn CPR and keep your skills up to date with yearly refresher courses.
