Rockhampton Regional Council has today announced their preferred site as part of their bid to bring Supercars Australia to our Region. Norbridge Park, a sporting ground on the banks of the Fitzroy, will be the home of Rockhampton’s Supercar race should the negotiations be successful.

Acting Mayor Councillor Tony Williams said a number of locations had been discussed with Norbridge Park coming out the preferred option due a number of benefits the site offered.

“It is a great central location, it has ample space for a track and big crowd numbers and it  would really showcase the Fitzroy River and Berserker Ranges. We are already investigating this site to become a multisport precinct, so having motor racing there would absolutely fit in with those plans,” Acting Mayor Cr Williams said.

“Another key reason we are looking at Norbridge Park is that there would be no impact on the main road network, and the multiple exit and entry points would keep any local disruption to a minimum.

“As I said last week this is still very early days – there are still feasibility studies to be done and consultations to complete. Following our announcement on Wednesday the response from the community has been overwhelming – the appetite for this absolutely exists. Council will continue to work hard to get this event, and the jobs, tourism, and economic boost that comes with it, to Rockhampton.”

Manager of Regional Development and Promotions Chris Ireland said discussions were ongoing with Supercars Australia.

“These discussions have been very positive, as has the reaction from residents, businesses, and sports groups since we shared our plans. I look forward to getting on with the next stage of these negotiations, including finalising our proposal before seeking support from both State and Federal Governments to progress it,” Mr Ireland said.
