Storytime at the Zoo returns with six new sessions
Published on 16 April 2026
Storytime at the Zoo is set to return this month, delivering six delightful sessions for young readers.
The program, delivered by Rockhampton Regional Libraries in partnership with Rockhampton Zoo, will run from April through September, with each session featuring a beloved children’s book.
Deputy Mayor and Communities, Culture and Heritage Councillor Drew Wickerson said these free, family-friendly sessions continue to be one of Libraries most popular early literacy initiatives.
“Storytime at the Zoo is a wonderful way to spark a love of reading in our youngest residents, and it’s just one of the many high-quality programs delivered by our Libraries team,” Cr Wickerson said.
“Every session is carefully chosen to match stories that children adore, and our librarians bring them to life with energy, colour, and creativity.
“I’m thrilled to see six fantastic titles on the schedule this year, including favourites like The Very Hungry Caterpillar and We’re Going on a Bear Hunt.
“Early literacy is so important for childhood development, and programs like this help build those foundational skills in a fun, engaging way.”
Parks, Sport and Public Spaces Councillor Cherie Rutherford said the zoo team is equally excited to welcome families back for another season of storytelling.
“The Rockhampton Botanic Gardens & Zoo is a much-loved place for families, and we’re proud to support this Libraries initiative to make their visit even more enjoyable,” Cr Rutherford said.
“We love seeing children light up when they hear a story and then spot some of our amazing residents, from the chimpanzees to the kangaroos, right here in person.
“Simply bring along your picnic rug, hat and sunscreen, and after Storytime wraps up, enjoy a wander through the Zoo.
“Then keep the reading momentum going by popping into one of our four library branches to discover everything they have to offer.”
