Rockhampton Region is gearing up for State of Origin season and will mark game one by painting the town maroon tonight.

The Quay Street lighting will take on the new colour scheme in true Queensland spirit.

Rockhampton Region Mayor Margaret Strelow said the feature lighting system can be put to a variety of uses, and this was an opportunity not to be missed.

“The building facades and new road pavement on Quay Street offer a unique canvas, and the lighting technology has the flexibility to change the character and mood of our city’s riverfront,” Mayor Strelow said.

Divisional Councillor Drew Wickerson said the buildings will sport the maroon lighting up until game day, and most likely Thursday in celebration of Queensland’s impending win.

“As proud Queensland supporters, this is a great way to evoke the Origin atmosphere in our community in support of the mighty maroons!

“Go Queenslander!”
