Twenty local business minds came together over the weekend to take part in SmartHub’s Annual Techstars Startup event in Rockhampton.

The two day event invited local residents with a business idea or interest in starting a business to participate.

Rockhampton Region Mayor Tony Williams said the Techstars Startup Weekend was deemed a great success with 14 ideas pitched and four teams created.

“It was fantastic to see the event come together and see many people learn and grow over the two and a half days,” Mayor Williams said.

“Not only did participants transform an idea into a feasible business plan, but they also obtained valuable business advice from highly experienced mentors, met like-minded individuals and connected with local networks.

“Although the ultimate prize of the weekend was transforming an idea into a market-ready proposal and the experience gained in doing so, teams were also competing for some great prizes.

“All teams did a spectacular job, and I am certain the judges had a tough time deciding on the winners,” Mayor Williams said.

Each team presented their proposal to the panel of judges, and after deliberation, the final placings were:

  • 1st - Tom's Microgreens - A supply of living, uncut and fresh Microgreens, herbs and flowers to the hospitality industry in Rockhampton.
  • 2nd - Outdoor Skills for Kids - Inspiring families to engage in nature.
  • 3rd - My Farm Dash - Providing graziers with a one-stop mobile dashboard to track their farm.
  • 4th - Daily - A habit-forming app that blocks distraction and leads you through the ideal daily routine.

Mayor Williams commended the participants, organisers, mentors and judges for a successful event.

“It was a highly rewarding weekend put together by a team of hardworking, passionate individuals.

“SmartHub is determined to see businesses from the Rockhampton Region grow and reach international markets, and this event is one of many that will help fulfil this goal.

“I encourage event participants to stay connected with SmartHub and continue working on their proposals, and in time I am sure the plans developed can go on to be successful businesses.

“I cannot wait to see this event, and many more like this, be hosted again in 2022.
