Tuesday marks the start of the school year and, as students across the Region head back to the classroom, Council would like to remind drivers to take care in school zones.

Chair of Council’s Planning and Regulatory Committee Councillor Ellen Smith said that all drivers should be aware of any school zones and plan accordingly.

“This is a big time of year for parents and students, but if you don’t have kids at school the start of a new school year can catch you off guard,” said Cr Smith.

“We would like to take this chance to remind drivers to be careful and alert, as 40km/hr school zone speed limits will soon be back in effect.

“School zones can get very congested within the school drop off and pick up times, and we thank drivers in advance for being patient, courteous and alert during these busy periods.

“We would also like to encourage parents and caregivers dropping off kids to be courteous to surrounding properties and other drivers.

“You can be fined if you park in a way that prevents access to driveways or intersections, if you park over yellow lines, in a bus zone, or in set down zones for longer than the indicated time.

“Please adhere to all regulatory signs and lines within the school zone to ensure the safety of all students and parents in the school area.

“We’re looking forward to a happy and safe return to the school year for parents, caregivers, and students across the Region.”
