Students at the Rockhampton North Special School are enjoying greater access to neighbourhood facilities thanks to works funded through Councillor Neil Fisher’s Councillor Capital Fund.

The works included the installation of an all abilities footpath through Janet Pujolas Park from the school’s Berserker Street entrance, as well as the addition of wheelchair accessible seating.

“Even though this may seem like a small project, it is making a big difference to the student’s day-to-day activities,” said Cr Fisher.

“This footpath helps connect the students to a number of other facilities, including Meals on Wheels – where students like to help out – and the local pool.

“Previously, many of the students were only able to travel between the school and these facilities in a vehicle, so this all-abilities footpath has really gone a long way to improving access.

“This project was requested by the school community, and it’s one I am very proud to support through Council.

“We have also begun to undertake a second stage to this project which I look forward to celebrating soon. All I can say at the moment is that we’re hoping it will be very fruitful!”

Rockhampton North Special School’s Principal Laurelle Allen said the collaboration between Council and the school has resulted in more opportunity for the students.

“The path has not only provided a wheelchair accessible link between the school and Meals on Wheels, but it promotes further partnership and work experience opportunities for senior secondary students,” Ms Allen said.

“Additionally, students with mobility needs are now provided with equitable access to the closely located 42nd Battalion Memorial Pool where the school conducts swimming lessons.”

The path was officially opened by School Captain Alana St Henry and Divisional Councillor Neil Fisher.
